Guyana-Jamaica rice dispute.(GUYANA)

A Guyanese official vowed to use the Caribbean Community to block Jamaica's bid to import U.S. rice, arguing that Guyana can supply most of Jamaica's grain needs instead, reports AP (Oct. 9, 2007):

Guyana, the region's largest rice producer, can meet most of Jamaica's annual need of 80,000-tons of rice, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud said. He said Guyana will try to block attempts by the island to buy rice from US farmers in Louisiana. Jamaica must apply for a waiver from the Caribbean Community economic bloc to import U.S. rice.
