Fed: ACCC commissioner says watchdog doesn't need leash

An ACCC commissioner says the body could turn from consumer watchdog to corporate lap-dogif a panel is set up to monitor its progress.

ROSS JONES has told a Melbourne business forum the Australian Competition and ConsumerCommission risks having its independence undermined if an inspector-general's put in place.

Mr JONES went head to head with Dr STEVEN KATES of the Australian Chamber of Commerceand Industry, who among his many gripes with the competition regulator, says it desperatelyneeds governance.

But Mr JONES says the ACCC's public process method of selecting its five independentcommissioners is the best way to guarantee its impartiality.

He says the commission believes that it's properly accountable and transparent in its operations.
