Sho: Aussies shoot themselves in foot

The first medal of the Beijing Olympics won't be heading to Australia.

The Australians shot themselves in the foot in the opening event, the women's 10 metre air rifle.

Three-time Olympian SUSAN McCREADY placed 42nd out of 47 competitors and fellow Victorian
ROBYN VAN NUS 44th in the qualification round at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall to miss
out on today's eight-strong final.

MCCREADY averaged 9.650 out of 10 after her 40 shots and Olympic rookie VAN NUS 9.600.

Czech KATERINA EMMONS, the 2004 Athens bronze medallist, upstaged hot local favourite
DU Li with a perfect 10.00 effort to top the qualification round, setting an Olympic record.

Reigning world and Olympic champion LI (9.975) shared second spot with two others.
